Boardwalk construction estimates: how much does a boardwalk cost? (2023)

Last update:June 9, 2021

The two most popular questions we receive are, without a doubt, "How much does this boardwalk system cost?"y"What is a rough estimate of the boardwalk cost per linear foot?"

In this article, we share preliminary informationTour construction cost.🇧🇷 We hope this is helpful when comparing the cost of a wooden pier versus a PermaTrak precast concrete pier.

Before we get started, here are some important points to keep in mind:

  • We typically share cost estimates for building boardwalks.Pro Quadratfuß (SF), rather than the linear foot prices that many designers are used to due to different width sizes.
  • The foundation system cost ranges below are typical for larger projects; Cost per square foot for smaller projects may be outside these ranges.
  • The price range for foundation options is very wide due to regional differences in labor rates and material costs.Southern states like Florida generally have lower employment rates than, say, northeastern states.
  • Depending on your project's location, shipping costs will affect the total project cost.

Boardwalk foundation materials: comparison between wood, concrete and steel

As we say, "No two sides are alike." One of the first steps in the draft document phase of a boardwalk project is toDetermining the type of foundationwill provide the greatest value within the owner's allocated budget and the specific application. For that reason, in this article, we've shared cost estimates for a PermaTrak wood dock installed on seven different foundation options.

Foundation costs are the main drivers of overall project costs because specified materials (wood, concrete, composite, or steel), construction methods, and construction requirements vary widely.

If you are interested in compiling a project-specific boardwalk budget estimate, we encourage you to review the information presented here.Request a quote for the tour🇧🇷 We will do our best to provide you with a detailed cost estimate for boardwalk construction, specific to your site and project requirements.

Boardwalk foundation cost estimates: concrete x wood x steel materials

Now for the good stuff! The eight most common types of foundations used to support the PermaTrak Boardwalk System:

  1. Precast concrete pillars(provided by PermaTrak)

  2. In-situ concrete foundations(Sonotubo)

  3. pile of firewood(Pressure Treated Southern Yellow Pine)

  4. Drilled well or concrete caissons

  5. spiral steel piles(many screws)
  6. fiberglass composite piles

  7. compressed steel piles(H pole or tube)

  8. precast concrete piles driven

These stackable pillar building blocks serve asbase plana(Extended Foundation) Type of foundation.

Whenever possible, we recommend using this system of precast concrete pillars; is the most cost-effective startup optionfor commercial boardwalk.

Springs are provided as part of the PermaTrak system. PermaTrakWalkways installed on this precast concrete pillar systemusually range from$50-65/sq ft🇧🇷 This installed number includesTour engineering and design support, Materials (Foundation system, beams and steps) delivered on site and labor to install the product.

2. Cast-in-place concrete foundations

Shallow footings (#1-2) are preferred over deep footing options (#3-6) as they help reduce boardwalk construction costs.

These cast-in-place foundations can be round or square. A cost estimate is provided for constructing a PermaTrak boardwalk installed on a flat cast-in-place concrete base.US$ 60-85/CHF.

3. Pile of Firewood

Pressure-impregnated wooden stakes (also known as wooden stakes) are the most common, mainly due to their economy.deep foundationCommercial boardwalk option. Diameter widths of 12 inches are often quoted, while general pile lengths can range from 10 to 40 inches.

Several variables affect the price of installing wooden piles: site access, required pile diameter, required digging depth, geographic region, total number of piles, soil conditions, etc.

Although these piles are supplied and installed by the contractor, we use historical data to estimate total installation costs. Usually a PermaTrakBoardwalk installed on a wood pile foundationcosts everywhereUS$ 60-85/CHF.

4. Test or concrete boxes

In northeastern states like Connecticut or Massachusetts, PermaTrak was installed in a reinforced concrete box. Pit foundations are common in Texas because of the extensive clay soils. This concrete pit or box method serves as adeep foundationPossibility. The majorityPermaTrak wood springs installed in a cast-in-place box systemCosts (deep foundation)$65-95/square foot.

When designing a cast-in-place coffered boardwalk, designers consider site conditions, industry standard box sizes, and final boardwalk height (height above ground level). All of these factors influence the structural engineer's design for drawer diameters and depths. The photo here onemultipurpose road projectShows tread about 5-6' above grade.

5. Steel coil piles (screw piles)

Steel bolted piles, sometimes called bolted piles, are less common than options #3 and #4 asdeep foundationoption, but they can offer a number of different advantages over a wood or concrete foundation for your project site. With increasing popularity and recognition, more and more designers are looking to spiral piles as an eco-friendly option, especially when the pedestrian walkway or bridge must be installed in sensitive wetlands, orby building from top to bottom.

Depending on the required diameter of the central steel shaft and the number and size of attached propellers,PermaTrak boardwalk system installed on spiral steel pile foundationwill usually cost$75-95/square foot🇧🇷 See an example fora PermaTrak project installed here on spiral piles.

6.fiberglass composite piles

FiberglassComposite piles have emerged as another cost-effective option.traditional deep foundation options described in points 3 and 4 above. Fiberglass composite posts combine low weight with high load capacity. This combination makes them ideal for hard-to-reach locations or where top-down construction is required.

Additionally, fiberglass has a significantly longer life than wood or steel in most environments. For most applications, a 10" or 12" diameter pile will provide more than enough axial and lateral capacity. Typical costs range from$75-95/sq ft.

7.Driven steel piles (H piles or tubes)

Other types of steel piles are less common for walkways and walkways. However, they can serve as a durable asset.deep foundationOption if project budget allows.

Depending on the size of the pile and the driving depth required, inPermaTrak boardwalk system installed on a compacted steel pile foundationwill usually cost$80-110/sq ft.

8. Driven concrete piles

Less common than options 1-5, precast concrete piles offer durability and longevitydeep foundationSystem. A walkway installed for the PermaTrak system on a compacted precast concrete pile foundation is a profitable area$80-120/sq ft.

What's included with the PermaTrak system

Boardwalk cost estimates listed above include production and shipping to site of the following PermaTrak components:

Longer spans with concrete beams = fewer footings = cost savings

Other recent projects have shown the same result: a concrete pier costs less than a wooden one. How can this be possible? The answer is that PermaTrak precast concrete beams can span at least twice the length of a wooden beam or "hallway". Installation costs can vary greatly depending on the project, and larger spans are not always the best design option.

But for walkway designs where longer beams are feasible, fewer footings are needed. We know that the foundation installation cost can represent a significant part of the total boardwalk construction cost. Fewer foundations save time and material = cost savings.Learn more about these potential cost savings for your project here.

Design assumptions and the evaluation process

Hopefully this square footage boardwalk price information will be helpful in your preliminary budget estimate. Remember, however, that these installed price ranges should only be "baseball" numbers.
